Programs for your school
“Ms. Pearmain is a gifted storyteller!”
Cheryl Nelson, President West Suburban Arts Council.
Once Upon a Caring Classroom: Bullying Prevention Through Storytelling
A 50-60 minute performance/interactive program.
Elisa tells multicultural folk tales that engage and involve the audience. These tales promote a greater awareness of the following aspects of bullying prevention:
Identifying the specific behaviors of bullying, including; physical, verbal and relational bullying. Teasing and gossiping included.
Identifying the different roles that are played in bullying situations, including; the bully(s), the join-ins, the silent observers, the helpers and the target(s) (victims).
Demonstrating the importance of respecting others, and having tolerance and appreciation for their differences and special qualities.
Taking responsibility for ones actions and understanding that stopping bullying is everyone's responsibility.
Helping targets of bullying to learn new empowering, nonviolent tools for dealing with bullies that can also raise self-esteem.
Inspiring and helping bystanders to standup for targets of bullying by identifying the challenges they face, helping them to find the courage and empathy to do so.
Inspiring a feeling of school-wide cooperation.
Audience members gain a greater awareness of the seriousness of bullying and new inspiration and strategies to help stop it. During the performance we create a detailed list of bullying behaviors for teachers and students to work with. Teachers receive follow-up suggestions to help the students to practice bullying prevention strategies in school.
“You made me think twice about what I say to people, and the way I look at them; their race, religion, seize-everything.” Sarah B., Grade 8, Dunn Middle School, Danvers.
“Your storytelling was entertaining as well as educational. Your stories matched our requests that you
address respect and bullying. Thanks to the ideas you gave my students on how to speak in front of a
group, I have seen a marked improvement in their presentations!”
Teacher, V. Barstow, Grade 5, Framingham, MA
Once Upon a Caring Classroom: Character Education Through Storytelling
A 50-60 minute performance/interactive program.
Helping children to develop positive character traits such as:
Cooperation Courage Diversity Appreciation/Inclusion Empathy Friendship
Generosity Honesty Kindness and Caring Leadership Skills Perseverance
Respect Responsibility Self-mastery
will give them the tools to succeed in their personal, social and work lives, and will make your school a safer more cooperative learning environment.
Elisa's fun and engaging tales invite the audience to step into the shoes of characters that struggle with and use these traits. Her thoughtful questions between stories help students to make connections to their own lives. These stories help to build a common language to talk about social competencies all year long. Elisa tailor's her program to meet your needs. Follow-up classroom visits in which students further explore the stories through fun exercises deepen the experience.
This program is based on Elisa's new book Once Upon a Time: Storytelling to Teach Character and Prevent Bullying. Lessons from 99 Folk tales (Greensboro: Character Development Group, 2006)
“I thought Ms. Pearmain did a remarkable job. The children picked
up on the lessons in the folk tales and loved the participation.”
Grade 3 Teacher St. Agnes School, Arlington, MA
What do I need?
I need a quiet room to perform in, with minimal distractions going on. I need a microphone if you will have me in a large space. (I can bring my own if the school does not have one of good quality with a long cord, and a mic stand. Podiums don't work as I move a lot.)
I usually suggest grouping K-2, 2-4, 5, 6-8, while keeping in mind that every school's needs are different.
I prefer group sizes of under 250, so that it is easier to reach all audience members.
Performance Fees:
1 performance of up to 249 students (I don't count them as they come in!) = $450 plus travel if over 60 miles rt.
2 performances of up to 249 students each = $500.00 plus travel as above.
3 performances as above = $600.00 plus travel.
1 performance for more than 250 kids = $500 plus travel if over 60 miles rt.
I usually charge about .30 cents per mile, and I live in Lincoln, MA which is near Rt. 128 and Rt. 90 (Mass pike)
Are my fees negotiable? Of course! I want to bring my stories to your school, so lets talk.
I hope you will call to discuss your school's needs in person: Elisa@wisdomtales.com or (781) 259-0492.

The students talked about the stories long after." Teacher E. Ezolt, Lynch Middle School, Holyoke.
Follow-up Workshops, Residencies and Teacher Training's.
I spent 10 years in the Boston Public Schools training students to create, write and tell stories. I'd love to come to your school for a 1-8 day residency to do the same.
The focus of the workshops or residencies can be to reinforce the learning in the performance, to strengthen oral skills, creative writing, and or all of the above. Through a series of fun exercises, students learn to create and tell stories to share with parents, classmates, and even a school-wide storytelling festival. This can work around a theme, or a cultural focus, or even a science unit!
My fee is usually the same for the first day of performances, and then $300 per day to visit up to four classrooms a day. Again, this is negotiable.
“The students truly soared during your residency. They were able to retell folk tales, create new endings and write, yes write! Every student should have an Elisa Pearmain in his life. Every teacher should have an Elisa Pearmain in her life.” K. Woerner, Grade 1 Boston Public Schools, Storytelling Residency.
Teacher Training Sessions - I've spent over 14 years training teachers through Lesley University to integrate storytelling into every aspect of their curriculum, and as an effective tool for enhancing the classroom culture for learning. I'd love to work with your teachers. I can train them to use my books and follow-up ideas. I can train them to be comfortable using storytelling across the curriculum to reach more learning styles, and help boost student or oral and literacy skills.
Fees: One 90 - 120 minute workshop is $350. Longer workshops are negotiable.
I hope you will call to discuss your school's needs in person: Elisa@wisdomtales.com or (781) 259-0492.
“Your storytelling program was spellbinding…Your Trunkful of Tales

“The truly sound effect of the evening arose from Pearmain's
dramatic capabilities. She was superb.” The Boston Phoenix.
